Windows 10 not shutting down correctly free. Windows 10 not shutting down properly

Ever since I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10, my computer will not shut down properly. It hangs at the "Shutting Down" screen for about 10 minutes, declares that there was a problem won't say what it was , and then restarts. The only way I can fully shut it down is a hard shut down with the power button. This happens every time the computer's been on more than an hour. Less than an hour, it shuts down just fine, but anymore than that I've seen similar but not exact posts and tried the "hold down shift while powering off" and that doesn't help.

It said my Display time and Sleep time were set for too long and changed them. We'll see if this helps because I deliberately set the Sleep to "never" because when the computer was going to sleep, it would never wake up. After upgrading to Windows 10, but not before. I tried shutting down and when I came back about 30 minutes later, the computer had rebooted. The good news is, at least after it went to sleep, I was able to wake it up easily.

After a couple of reboots, Santosh's response above seems to have at least partially fixed the problem for me. The computer now shuts down when I want it to. The only problem is, on a couple of occasions, it's shut down on its own not gone to sleep when left unattended for a couple of hours. It's annoying, but better than not being able to shut down at all. Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit.

It could be a compatibility issue with the new Fast Startup component. Shut Down the computer, wait a couple of minutes and then use the Power Button to start the computer. You may try from the command prompt and check as well it if it doesn't fix the issue.

Hi Brad, Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community. Thanks for your feedback. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to A. User's post on August 22, I'll let you know. But it still won't shut down without a hard shutdown. I am having the same issue. When I shut my PC down at night, the next morning it is still shutting down. I cannot turn it off without a hard shutdown. In reply to Pentarou's post on August 24, I am having similar problems.

The only way to close down is by using the switch on the computer power supply. In reply to KateOrr's post on August 26, On the Left side menu, select Choose what the power buttons do. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable. Scroll down to the Shutdown settings section.

Remove the check mark from the Turn on Fast Startup option. Select the Save Changes Button. Thank you for your reply. I did work through the procedure from Santosh but other than changing the power from "High Performance" to " Normal " it did not make any difference to the problem.

Removing the check from Turn on Fast Startup did the trick. Many thanks. This site in other languages x.
